New Hard Drive, Time Machine

I recently had a hard drive die, and thanks to Time Machine, backing it up to a new drive was a snap.

However, the new hard drive is not yet set up to be backed up by Time Machine. Since it's essentially a clone of the now-dead hard drive, how can I tell Time Machine to back the new hard drive up as if it were the old one? Or do I need to trash the files from the TM disk for that old drive, and just start anew with the new hard drive?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Open Time Machine Preferences and select the new drive as your backup.

My advice would be get another (it can be inexpensive) USB external drive and do a fresh TM backup. At least you will still have the original TM backup until the new one is done and safe.

This stuff is just too important, two backups is quite a good idea at least until the system is back up and running.

This is what I have done when I have had to restore or replace my hard drive. You can always reuse the older TM drive at some point in the future.

Cheers

Stephen

Thanks, Stephen and Mike. I think getting an additional hard drive for more redundant backups sounds like the best idea.
