I need to purchase a new/bigger HD. How can I transfer all my app's (which are many) to the new HD without having to re-install everything? I was told using Time Machine will only backup a HD and you can not launch from a HD that was created using Time Machine.
Thanx

There are apps like Carbon Copy and Super Duper that will clone your HD. I use Super Duper and it will copy all of my apps, system files and most of the authorizations. I have to re-authorize DP and a couple others. Other than that it does a great job.

The free release app starts from scratch each time you make a clone (30 minutes).
The paid release will allow updating an old saved clone (4 minutes).
IMHO, both are very good values.

Time Machine does exactly what you want - just not the way you want.
The problem with SD or CCC is that, if any system files get corrupted over time - and often they do, these problems will copy over also.
You need to boot from an install DVD. Install your OS. Now import all your files and settings from Time Machine or from your old hard drive.
No matter how you do it, you will have to re-authorize DP and anything else that uses your HD id as part of the authentication process but that is easy. Any app that uses iLOK will not be affected.
