Intel iMac and DVD's

I have had my iMac since June 2010 - and today was the first time I tried to play DVD films on it - some work and some don't. In particular it seems to be Region 2 DVD's and DVD9 formats. Older ones seem to work.

But quite frankly I'm amazed they do not work on my newish iMac. I tried them on my old G4 Quicksilver (on which I had replaced the CD drive with a DVD drive I installed myself) and blow me - they worked perfectly.

I just cannot understand how this can be - is there something any of you guys think I am missing?

Is your dvd drive set to region 2 in the iMac?
Or maybe you can try setting it to region 0 (zero) which I understand is a universal region identifier. And remember that you can only change the region code 5 times; after that the 5th change becomes permanent.

How do I set the region in my dvd drive?

The DVD Player Help file gives a way to do so but I've not found it. Then again I haven't had to change my region. I wonder if it's one of those things where it comes from China one way and if you put a DVD in from a different region it then asks you to make the change? Apple's weird that way. I'm in region 1 (USA)

Thanks - I'll keep looking. I got some DVD's to play last night after slipping a DVD lens cleaner in. Maybe that was the problem. I will continue to test but thanks for your response.
