Boot from External hard drive clone Re-register programs?

So I cloned my G5 iMac OS 10.4.11 hard drive using Carbon Copy Cloner. I then used the hard drive clone to open my iMac for a test. Everything was there but as I went through Kontakt, Ivory, Reason, Amplitube etc. It asked me to register all these programs again. Why if this is a clone of the same computer and used as a boot drive for the same computer does this happen?

I tried this last year with Superduper and experienced the same disappointing results
if I understand this correctly the drives must be identical, exactly the same size etc... for the drives to be recognized as identical.
If the info is the same but the drives are different sizes they will contain different sectors.
if anyone else can explain this better or provide a method to do this successfully I would be most appreciative as well.

It's my understanding that every hard drive has a unique ID that many authorizations need to see to be valid, so even if you clone the drive you'll still need to reauthorize much of the software.

FWIW, that has been my experience.

This is normal, in my experience too.
And this is one of the reasons I LOVE iLocks... you don't have to worry about anything of this with them!

Why?!? The answer is quite simple: They do not want you cloning their software. I am not certain why this is so hard to understand. There is not a single software company that wants SuperDuper!, CarbonCopyCloner or anything else to defeat their licensing - even though, with straight serial authorization, you can quite easily.
If you have the proper authorization disks or internet authorizations etc. then this is an expected inconvenience.
If you fail to de-authorize internet authorizations first (Finale etc.) then a phone call to tech support should be sufficient to get you back on track providing you have the proper proof that you own the required licenses - I have never had such a request turned down and I have three programs that require it (and three calls I had to make when I forgot to de-authorize my G5 when porting to my new iMac -- oops!).
Although I consider iLok authorizations a time consuming pain to set up, they do work as advertised. Moving my iLok protected apps worked like a champ and all I had to do was put the dongle into my new machine and they worked perfectly. I am not sure why DP hasn't gone that way yet but, when it does, I will follow (grumbling during the setup process, I assure you).
Apple's and Microsoft's lax approach to protecting their software has given so many a false sense of entitlement. They think they should be able to copy anything they have on their machines for any reason. Read the licenses, you do not own any of the software on your machines unless you wrote it yourself. You have only licensed the use of one or more copies under very strict limitations as spelled out in the Terms and Conditions. Not only that, you agreed to those T&Cs when you installed them.

I transferred everything over to my new imac, but I re downloaded all my NI stuff and my Nomad factory stuff and just reauthorized with my appropriate serial #'s and it worked flawlessly. Same with all my ToonTrack stuff. Took a couple hrs but I took my time and everything worked....

Thanks for the info. Hard drive ID's. Hadn't thought of that. I thought the machine ID's were what they were looking for. I get the piracy issue and have an iLok but the same machine doesn't constitute piracy.

Some softwares rely on HD ID, others on motherboard ID.
When you know that it's definitely fast and easy to get a safety external FW HD up and running with SuperDuper.
Just get your original CDs and DVDs, and serial numbers, at hand, or safety copy of them.

so if you have identical drives for boot and cloned backup boot drive, size model etc...will they have the same i.d.?
would this clone work like the original boot drive and not need re authorizations?
when I upgrade to my next Mac ideally I would like to to have a cloned boot drive just in case the boot drive goes bad or if a upgrade fouls things up etc....
I don't understand how Superduper or CCC are worth the entrance fee if you can't clone your own drive for protection, how are they any better than simply copying data from 1 drive to the other?

.
You can have them cloned for protection, and they work GREAT.
Having bootable clones is a million times faster than copying files...
ALL we have to do is simply reauthorize a few apps (including DP) that are not in an iLok-like device.
It only takes 5 minutes! Really!

+1 on what FM says.
Worth the five minutes, and deep peace of mind when facing heavy sessions or stage jobs.

...not to mention the "entrance fee" to CC and Super Duper is the time it takes to install a free download!

I have the paid version of Superduper, when I cloned my boot drive all of my apps need to be reauth except 2 that use ilock, this can not be done in a few minutes.
