MicroBook Input Volume

Greetings,
I am trying to resolve an issue with the input volume on my MicroBook being excessively low. I am pretty sure I am missing some setting or doing something stupid, I am pretty new to all this and working on getting a home recording setup.
Here is my setup - I have a Roland SPD-30 which I have connected to the rear (inputs 3-4) of the MicroBook via two TRS cables for right and left channels. I am using Logic Pro 9 and have the latest MicroBook drivers from MOTU. I have set up the input settings in Logic to receive inputs 3 and 4 in stereo mode. I have the master volume on the SPD-30 maxxed and in the CueMix FX software I have maxxed out all the volume controls there, as well. However, the sound volume is very low. I have tried making several recordings and I can't get the input above -13 dB (I hope I'm correct with that statement) when banging on the SPD-30 pads.
One setting that did make a difference for me (it used to be worse) was in the CueMix FX software. Under the Mixes tab, I discovered the Line 1-2 channel (which appears to be what is mapped to the 3-4 inputs on the rear) was muted by default. Once I unmuted it, I was able to get a much louder volume coming through, but it is still far below what I would like. I haven't changed any of the other settings, it's pretty much set to defaults still (except for the unmuted Line 1-2).
Any advice/suggestions are greatly appreciated. Many thanks.
