New MacPro and new RME FF800

anybody using thew RME interface? I can't get it to be 'recognized". As the MacPro only has FW800 ports I've bought a FW800 cable as well as a FW400x800 cable. The RME came with a FW400 cable....
I'm not sure what the FW800 ports on the RME are actually for, except maybe hooking to another RME, as nothing even shows up in the Mac hardware profile if I plug into the FW800 port. Using the 400x800 cable I get this in the hardware profile
Vendor 0xA35 Device 0x101800:
Manufacturer: 0xA35
Model: 0x101800
GUID: 0xA35004FB534C3
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec
Connection Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
Sub-units:
Unknown Unit:
Unit Software Version: 0x1
Unit Spec ID: 0xA35
so the Mac appears to be seeing something, but connected, but it's not recognized...
I've reloaded the software, repaired permissions, but the RME software will only launch if it detects the FF800.
Power is on, Red LED host light is on, as are green LED's at +4dB in/out
DP see's nothing but the internal audio and my MIDI controller
anybody have any ideas?
