You may think i should know how but i do not.

What software do i require to make a movie from a collection of still pictures ?

Free would be nice although if there is a reasonably priced shareware that would be nice also.

Apple actually calls it "The Ken Burns Effect". If you have a fast enough Mac, it is easy to do.

I've found it's actually easier to do it in iphoto - you make a slideshow & then export it to quicktime.

Perhaps a newer version of iPhoto corrects the issue I have: The resolution of the file one can export to Quicktime is limited... no HD export, or even standard DVD quality. One other issue is iPhoto will play back the same file a different speeds depending on the speed of the computer used, so synch to audio is tough to lock down. On the other hand, I find iPhoto very quick and easy to use in creating slideshows (no audio) for home use, Ken Burns FX and all. I just hook my laptop up to my plasma TV with a VGA connection and play from the computer. iPhoto allows you to display in 16:9 or 4:3 format when you create a slideshow.

One of the best "In Jokes" of all time involves the cast of "The IT Crowd", where a photo montage of the characters, with some prostitutes from Amsterdam, in a theme park with the "Ken Burns Effect" fading from frame to frame, with a classical guitar version of Bach's "Jesu", (which is the default iMovie soundtrack), appears in the closing credits of season 1.

+1 on iMovie. Fast and easy to jump in and get things done.
