Can I just get a MOTU MIDI interface??

I just had my audio interface fail on me and was wondering if the output of the Macbook Pro i5 was as good as a Firebox output would be audio-wise. I'd rather save some money and buy just a Motu MIDI interface. I don't know. It's mainly for live stuff but I would need an output for the audio which would be my Macbook Pro output. What do you think? Could I get away with the sound quality?

I've only touched a laptop once in my life, but if the Mac Pro outs have been anything to go by over the years, I'd say that for non-high-end gigs (think Jacko, Gaga, Beyonce et al), it should be just fine.

IMHO, much of the advantage pristine converters hold over their inferior brethren would be lost through typical/mediocre PAs and their placement, amps and desks, imperfectly-designed rooms and so on. Personally, I'd go the MIDI interface and be sure to buy MOTU. Not a plug. I just love 'em and wouldn't want to use anything else. I even bought a spare Express XT, the only spare piece of equipment I've ever bought; I simply can't imagine getting by without them.

Just make sure you are not driving a long line. A short cable to direct box(es) for balancing should work OK. So would a Motu FastLane USB if you need only a couple of MIDI ports.

Of course! Great call, HC.

I've obviously been running promestic items for far too long and appreciate the reminder that they haven't got cojones... or headroom for that matter.
