big projects and buffer settings & crashes

guys,.. do you use a "default" buffer setting?

I've got a couple pretty big projects (1-2 GB) worth of VI's loaded.

It seems that unless I have dp buffer set to at least 512,...it crashes pretty routinely.

This is probably normal behavior due to all the VI's eating the ram.

guess I'm just curious?

I use an outboard mixer for zero latency monitoring, so I just set DP's buffer to 2048 and never have a problem. I suppose you could set it low for tacking then up it for mixing. 512 sounds kind of low to me for a large project.

The only problem I have with outboard mixer (8pre) is balancing the internal playback with the outboard signal. Usually, I want backing tracks to be loud enough to be heard, but the recording to be prominent. I wish there was a way of controlling loop-through volume from within DP.

yeah, no mixer here,...and that is too high for me to play ext or VI's in time along with the project

The old Hobson's choice - lower buffer settings reduce latency, but tax
the CPU more and can result in crashes or freezes.

I don't think there is any easy answer - it's pretty much either/or. I
think the best solution really is another computer running the VI's,
hooked up via MIDI, and the audio from that computer's audio interface
bussed back into DP either via hardware mixer or inputs on your main
Mac's audio interface. This is what I've done for years - one of the
reasons I'm still on a G5.

512 is the lowest buffer setting I ever use. Normally I'm at 1024.

thanks guys,...

I had a feeling about this,...hmmm. odd as it may sound,my ensemble has always been set and forget @128 for Logic. I find many things easier in dp and even though I have 3 computers I can use. I still would rather go with one machine....
I haven't turned on my Giga PC in months. never thought about offloading to my Macbook pro either.

Maybe I need to start reconsidering this if I use dp more.

thanks again
