Pro Tools HD NATIVE
It only took, what, 15 years to realize that TDM sucks? This is big competition for MOTU's main share of the market. Curious to see what'll happen there.

I got that in an email blurb from Sweetwater. Did you see the price for the "Core Card?" No thanks, I will pass.

An entry level PCI PT system is still $6k with this. …down from $12k-ish.

Re: Pro Tools HD NATIVE
Do I have this right? Is this core card pretty much Avid's version of the MOTU PCI-424e? I looked at the photo of the card, and it looks like there's no DSP on it or just minimal to handle low-latency monitoring like the MOTU system. Ouch... that's a lot of bucks. I guess though they must finally give you Automatic Latency Compensation. This is the new "step-up" for the PT LE people?billf wrote:I got that in an email blurb from Sweetwater. I was scratching my head trying to figure out what the big deal is. That card is as expensive as my Mac Pro, so unless there's more to this than meets the eye, it's way overpriced.James Steele wrote:Do I have this right? Yeah, and they still have you locked into their hardware. No thanks. For that kind of money I could buy a lot of gear that I could put to better use.

Considering I have Apogee 16x's ported through 2808 without the ability to use analog inserts in DP MAS maybe PTNative is something I will consider. Still would use DP as front end. Right?

Re: Pro Tools HD NATIVE
But if you are tracking a 13 piece ensemble full band live to 30+ tracks and doing a headphone mix through the computer and saving the set up / headphone mix and trying to do it at a higher rate than 24 / 96 can you still do this with PT native?
Has any one compared it to an HD 3 or 4 or more on a 12 core MAC?

Re: Pro Tools HD NATIVE
I think people are missing the significance of this PT9 release. The software now runs natively on any Mac, and does NOT require any Avid audio interfaces or DSP hardware. The track counts have been raised significantly, and many features that used to cost a lot of money (like time code support) are now included at no extra charge.kassonica wrote:Completely and utterly UNDERWHELMED
This opens the door for thousands of new PT users who can get HD/TDM performance without the HD/TDM price. MOTU will probably see an increase in hardware sales (audio interfaces) but a decrease in DP software sales.

Re: Pro Tools HD NATIVE
Actually, I doubt MOTU will see a drop in DP sales, considering that the people who buy it typically need quality MIDI support, which I'm guessing PT 9 still doesn't deliver (unless they have gone far forward of where MIDI stands in PT
.
Even so, I like audio editing in DP. PT is a great tool, and I think it's silly to put it down. The main problem has been the business model, which historically was quite limiting for those not on a huge budget.
DP 7.21 is so awesome that I just don't personally see the need for other tools at this point, but needs can change.
For instance, when it comes to stereo editors that are more mastering-oriented, I do not feel that one product does it all well enough. BIAS Peak Pro still doesn't support AU GUI's for 64-bit plugs (unless that changed recently and I missed the update -- and probably it will be OK in the next release, which was announced at AES but which I missed as I was in a rush and their booth did not make it clear that this is the next version vs. a repackaged bundling of the current version).
I was using Wave Editor for SRC until upgrading RX to RX 2 Advanced. But even Wave Editor still gets use, as my mastering tool when I need to use a 64-bit plug-in that doesn't work currently in BIAS Peak Pro 6. Also, I will need WE vs. Peak if doing serious DDP work and other CD mastering tasks (not audio mastering, but Red Book creation for CD duplication houses, etc.).
But back to multi-track audio+MIDI DAW's, DP does it all. There are some enticing plugs that are PT-only, but as the years have gone by, most if not all of them have excellent AU equivalents or competitors.
So, I am glad to see Avid take this new line on PT, but for many of us, the time had already passed when we would consider adding PT to our setup.
But this is not a condemnation of PT, and I think this is where some people get confused about what all of this means for us and the industry. It actually enables a lot of new players and helps a lot of smaller players remain competitive or become moreso, as it lets them reach beyond their PT base. In my view, the entire industry wins.

Re: Pro Tools HD NATIVE
I may just get PT 9 so I can finally work with other clients who are
on Pro Tools. HD was always too expensive, and the LE and M-box audio
interfaces always sucked, so to me this release of PT 9 is good news.
It won't stop me from using DP...which at nearly the same price point
as PT 9, offers a whole lot more.

And remember to see if your needs require ponying up an extra 2K to Avid for this:

Re: Pro Tools HD NATIVE
Hey, for the $249 upgrade from LE, I am now able to open projects people give me in PT, consolidate the tracks, export them as WAV for import into DP.... wait, I could do that before..
oh right, I forgot, now I don't have to press a switch on my monitor controller to switch between the Mbox and the 828mk3..
to audition the tracks.
