Opening standard MIDI files crashes DP 7.12 (!?)

It looks weird but I can't open any MIDI files in DP 7.12 any more.
DP crashes each time I try to open a simple standard MIDI files:
- I open a MIDI file
- the "rainbow wheel" appears
- BOOM! DP crashes!!
I have the crash log but it's long and I don't want to waste the forum space (let me know if you want me to post it here).
The last time I opened with no problems a standard MIDI file in DP 7.12 has been on the end of July (both via menu command "open" and "drag and drop" to DP).
In the mean time I added to my setup Audio Ease Altiverb 6, both AU and MAS, and I also had a few problems with the CoreAudio driver - I usually use "Digidesign HW (HD)" - because I launched DP while Digi HW was off (DP switched to "MIDI only" but after a while it crashed).
The MIDI files I have to work with are ok and are not corrupted (I checked them both with PT and QuickTime Player).
I also tried with some MIDI files generated a few months ago by DP itself but the problem is always the same: DP crashes!
It looks like something has corrupted somewhere and/or something else is badly interacting with DP, but I can't figure out what it could be (Altiverb may be?).
Since I needed to use those MIDI files, I've also - stupidly - upgraded to DP 7.2: same crash problem plus DP 7.2 cannot handle my "old" projects (i.e. DP 7.2 looses all the audio files references/names/paths... a true nightmare).
So I downgraded to 7.12 or I hope I did it at least: I simply trashed the 7.2 version application, but all its "new" files are there interacting with DP 7.12, is it safe?
May I need to perform a clean install of DP 7.12 (I have the original DVDs and all the upgrades MOTU released, but I've no idea of what I have to trash or not)?
Or have I simply to trash some preferences or such?
Do you DP gurus have any suggestion and/or ideas?
My setup:
MacPro QuadCore 2,66GHz
OS 10.5.8
DP 7.12 (with some 7.2 stuff)
PT 8.0.1
MachFive 2.0.2
Komplete6
Waves Diamond 7.09
Altiverb6
PTHDAccel+192
TIA
Ale
