Help me get this tempo map correct!
I've got a client who is recording at a different studio but wants me to notate the MIDI string parts for her so she can have live players play them. (I'm mixing the album when it's finished, otherwise I'd just turn this tedious work down). They recorded very rubato MIDI piano without a click track, and then played MIDI string parts along to that piano. Then they just send me the MIDI files, I notate them, and email the finished string notation back to her.
I have to create a tempo map in the conductor track so that when I go into Quickscribe and look at the individual string parts, there aren't a bunch of ties and rests all over the place.
1) I recorded the piano MIDI to audio.
2) Then I went into the Setup menu, gone to "Recieve Sync" and selected "Tap Tempo" and set that all up.
3) Then I select "Slave to External Sync".
4) I hit my designated MIDI note 3 times (it's in 3/4) and the MIDI starts playing. I tap along through the song (I muted the audio and played along to the MIDI).
4) When I'm done recording, DP calculates a tempo map, but when I turn off "Slave to External Sync" and play it back with a metronome the audio is lined up, but DP has readjusted the MIDI notes because it thought that the original way it was played was "to the click", so now that the click has been altered, it's trying to fit those notes to the new click.
Is there a way that I can tell DP to leave the MIDI notes in place, and move the "grid" around it?

Use Project>Modify Conductor Track>Record Beats and The MIDI should line up normally.

SWEET! Why didn't I know about this sooner? (I just looked in my manual under "Record Beats", I haven't actually done it yet).
So is "Record Beats" for the times you need to keep the MIDI notes there, and Tap Tempo for when you need to align the click for audio?

THANK YOU, PKM!!!! I have been looking for this feature for a long time, and I feel like an idiot for not knowing about this sooner. This is the perfect feature for scoring to video freely, and then creating a tempo map around your MIDI performance to retain a natural feel (and great workflow).

No problem! Glad to help. That's exactly what I use it for: playing to picture, then creating a tempo map from the MIDI performance.erikjamesmusic wrote:THANK YOU, PKM!!!! For some reason, I've found Record Beats to be a little inaccurate. What I do is create an audio track of something percussive - usually a drum stick on a hard surface - then use Find Beats on that track. I don't know why, but this method usually requires less tweaking for me. Just a thought.

Interesting. Recording another track to get a tempo map from is definitely another step in the process. I'll try both ways later tonight
