Tiger Vs. Leopard

Though both Tiger and Leopard are both relatively ancient OS's, I remember scattered vehement arguments on the web in favor of Tiger's Core Audio. Some claim that no OS's subsequent to Tiger boast significant improvements to Core Audio, and further claim that -- at least as far as audio -- Tiger is way more stable than Leopard or Snow Leopard. They go on to claim that Leopard introduces quirky software behavior. I'm not sure I buy this. Anybody care to weigh in?

I think it's all water under the bridge since fewer and fewer Macs will use Tiger and DP is no longer officially supported on Tiger.

DP 4.6.1 in OS 10.4.11 is about as rock solid as it gets. DP 5.13 in OS 10.5.8 is equally good.

Time Machine, in my opinion, is why OS 10.5 is the bare minimum for anyone running professional aps i.e. where time=money. If you have a fast enough PPC, there is no reason not to be on it. If you have an intel chip, you need 10.6.

For hobbyists... hey, whatever works, works I suppose. I made great recordings on my Beige G3 using DP 2.7 on OS 8.6. But that was then...

Those of us who use DP to make all or part of our living need to be on the latest, most up to date versions of the hardware, OS and DP that works. Right now, that's DP 7.2, OS 10.6.x and intel processor.

Yes, if you read my signature, you know that I am behind the curve but, like many, I have been waiting for yesterday's announcements to upgrade. I'll be spending a few thousand $$$$ in the next few months to upgrade everything. I do wish I had some idea when DP 8 was coming out, though.

In my case, I am looking at the latest iMac for three reasons. It costs a lot less than a Mac Pro/large Apple monitor, I don't do much with VI and it uses about 50% the energy (and generates less heat) than a tower and big monitor. Half the time I run my air conditioner, it's to keep my G5 cool so I'm kind of sensitive on this issue. I really want a Mac Pro ... well, you can't have too much horsepower so, if I can find another $2,000 or so, I may still go there with a 6 or 8 core... Maybe.
