Ultralite Mk3 hybrid SPDIF noise + cracks and pos

I've just got a new Mk3 and built a new desktop
specs
Gigabyte x58a-ud3r Mobo
i7 - 930 cpu
6 gig Corsair Ram
Gigabyte 9600GT Silent Cell Graphics card
The mobo has onboard texas instruments firewire
I'm getting massive levels coming in to my spdif...peaking all the way. There's nothing connected to it so I have no idea where it's coming from. I currently have to mute the SPDIF channel.
I'm also getting clicks and pops when I'm trying to record
96K (I haven't tried any other freq) and I've tried every buffer size from 128 up to 2048.
I've tried it with firewire, usb and usb on my laptop, all with the same results.
Motu have been absolutely useless, and apart from 1 reply which asked if I had Texas Instruments onboard (even though it happens on usb also), they haven't replied. I've tried to call them repeatedly, but it's like they take the phone off the hook or something.
Any help would be greatly appreciated...I'm sure not getting any from MOTU
