Any idea why my volume is set at maximum when I turn on my mac pro?
I think this started happenning after I connected my speakers to an audio interface...maybe? maybe not..

I have been banging on about this for years now!!

If you have active monitors, I think it is really important to have a monitor controller between any audio interface and the monitors.

This allows you to always keep your audio interface output at maximum..... best for the D-A converters. And then follow with a monitor controller that can be muted, or attenuated.

You can also follow the protocol of muting speakers prior to power up or shut down.

Also important to respect the order of power-up and power-down. I have blown a few tweeters over the years by powering up/down in the wrong order. Make sure to power up the audio interface and Mac first before powering up the monitors.

Maybe not relevant to your point.. but maybe of interest..

The volume of what, of your interface?

If so, I'd think it's normal.

Once I almost blasted a friend of mine with one of OS's stupid sounds... you can control those independently, and even send them through the built in sound card to protect your hearing and speakers.

Is that why you ask? The software controls of mine are grayed out and can not be changed via software, AFAIK. I use my external mixer to control the monitoring levels, though.

The practice of turning your monitors off or either down to avoid damaging your hearing and or monitors on power up.

That's my "protocol", as well.

I have the PreSonus Central Station feeding a switchable set of Genelecs and NS-10s.

I turn the volume knob on the PreSonus remote all the way down on both shut-down and power-up.

(I did the same when I used to have a mixer, too...master faders all the way down.)

And it's getting harder and harder to find NS-10 tweeters...yes, I've blown at least 3 sets...feedback loops.

And what a drag to send transient spikes through your Gens... that's an expensive endeavor! It's funny, I don't get anything using this Apogee one though. It must have a feature on them. Never heard anything when restarting or anything. I think audio I/O's should just have a feature built in that either mutes for a specific amount of time, or have some kind of envelope to gradually ramp up to the output that's set.

I have a central station too. There's also a convenient mute button on the central station remote that I ALWAYS engage before I shut down my studio.

I monitor through the optical out on my G5. Only the internal speaker sounds when I power up.
