Preferred OS with DP7

Hey. Is there a preferred Mac OS for use with DP7? I am using 10.4.11 with DP4.6 and making the jump to DP7. Just wondering if I should update my OS as some people say to use the older OS as it has been tested.

Might be helpful to post your Mac and hardware specs as well as your demands on DP as these all factor in to OS recommendations.

If you're on a G5, Tiger works great (10.4.11)

What they said. If you're on a G5 I would suggest staying with Tiger. If you're on an Intel machine that's different. I'm having a grand old time with DP 7.12 and Snow Leopard 10.6.4 on a Mac Pro 1,1.

Thanks for the responses. I am on a dual 2.5ghz G5. I've been using DP4.6 and OS 10.4.11 on this same computer for about 5 years. I haven't had any major problems with this set up, and am now excited to upgrade everything. I use Waves plug ins, virtual synths, etc. It's not the most powerful setup, and I almost always push it to the max, but I am able to accomplish what I need to. I do everything in DP without a mixing board or other devices that require clocking and synching. I wonder however if I add new software such as Komplete 6 or other new applications that it might require a newer OS. When I bought DP7, my sales rep, the very helpful Matt LaPoint, suggested staying with 10.4.11 as it has been tested on this OS and all of the bugs have not been worked out for newer OS.

I know Matt! He's a good guy and knows what he's talking about. It is POSSIBLE to run DP 7.12 on a G5 with Leopard... BUT there's a risk that you may have problems with older plugs. Older Native Instruments VIs were particularly problematic with the G5/Leopard/DP7 combo.

I recently tried bumping a PPC G5 to 10.5.8 from 10.4.11. Everything BUT DP6 worked fine. I ended up building a dual boot system on a new HD from scratch, 10.5.8 on one partition and 10.4.11 on another. Still couldn't get 10.5.8 to play nice with DP. Seems staying at 10.4.11 is maybe wise with these machines. Though, I also moved a G4 PPC Mini to 10.5.8 with no ill effects at all. Go figure.

Well this is where the Your Mileage May Vary disclaimer seems to apply so well, because I ran DP 6.02 (and later DP7.x) for a while on my dual 2.3 G5 running Leopard, and aside from issues with older Native Instruments VIs really didn't have much of a problem. DP "worked" just fine otherwise.

No problems here once I sent the old Preferences files to the Trash.

Great discussion.
I'm stuck with Leopard on a MBP due to my DM-3200 not supporting Snow Leopard.
It's running fantastic.

I'm on a G5 with Leopard and DP 7.12. It runs GREAT!
You just need to make sure you have the latest supported versions of everything (drivers, plug-ins, VIs, etc.).
In fact, it works so great, that I deleted the Tiger partition I had done to my system HD as a fall back. I never used it!
The only thing I've noticed is that the fan kicks in much more often. Even for things that I wasn't used to hearing it, such as opening a QT movie or using Screen sharing.
But no biggie. This setup is even more solid that my past one (Panther/DP4.61).
Since Tiger is already considered a legacy product, and 3rd party support for it won't last much longer, I'd say go for Leopard.
But I recommend redoing your templates, Clippings, audio bundles and the likes from scratch. This way you make sure there won't be any weirdness.
Also, DO NOT use Migration Assistant. Do a fresh instal of everything.

Senior Apple techs have repeatedly told me (during escalated tech calls) to NEVER use Migration Assistant. If there is any kind of file problem, permissions problem, or access (also a permissions issue) problem, Migration Assistant simply copies the files 'as is' warts and all. File corruptions and irregularities are simply copied.
Not too bad if you only use the Mac for DTP, WP, and basic stuff, but when you get into the bowels of computing as specialized apps do (DAWs, notations programs, advanced graphics apps, etc) this can really screw things up. FWIW, I had a permissions problem with a few apps (Finale, M-Audio drivers, etc) that I could not fix for years. Once I stopped using migration ass. all those went south.
What Fernando said! +100
