Patch changes for VIs?

For the life of me, I can't figure out how to get a VI to respond to patch changes. I've seen a few mentions of this in the forums, but nothing that has answered my question.
I've tried the obvious: putting a patch change in a MIDI track routed to the VI, but that doesn't work. There HAS to be a way!
Help?
Thanks!

What VI are you using? I use patch changes with LASS instrument banks in Kontakt 3.5 without any real problems.

I'd settle for MOTU VIs to start: BassLine, Proton, PolySynth, MachFive2. I also have Cakewalk's Dimension Pro and Rapture.

VIs have to be coded to recognise and respond to MIDI patch change commands. Most are not.
Kind regards.

Ah. Well, that was a most unexpected piece of information. I mean, why would someone create a plug-in - especially a synthesizer - that can store presets but not recall them in an automated fashion? There must be some reason of which I'm not yet aware.
