Difference between Scene and Pattern

OK, I've read the manual, and it seems to me that scenes and patterns are basically the same. Why would I use one over the other?

To build a song, it seems that I would use scene1, then scene 2, etc..then string them together.

Too bad mute information doesnt get saved with scenes (or does it?). That would make things really simple. Copy pattern, mute parts, make song, done. lol.

Do you still need help or did you figure it out?

Just a create a blank pattern to called "mute" to get the same result. Thing is you can assign the same pattern to many scenes. Then its as simple as selecting it for any particular scene. Saved mute info would be cool though.

So is there any way to trigger patterns independently of scenes? Seems like with the current setup, one could really only have 16 scenes/patterns cued up for live triggering. AKA I am not really interesting in layering patterns with 4 different banks, but I suppose if I wanted to have more than 16 cued patterns with the same kit, I would have to duplicate that kit onto the other banks and trigger from the corresponding MIDI channels?
