Ultralite Mk3 - MIDI input question

Greetings,
Although I've been working with DAW software/equipment for several years now, I've only recently begun to work with a MIDI keyboard. My question is this: is there a performance advantage in using the MIDI input on my Ultralite (Mk3) as opposed to a USB cable?
I've got a Yamaha KX8 keyboard, and the reason I ask is that I note the Cubase ASIO meter looks very nervous/jittery when I have the keyboard connected (buffer at 256, currently using a USB cable), but if I boot the project with the keyboard disconnected the ASIO meter looks normal and mellow.
I don't have a MIDI cable around, so thought I'd ask for opinions/insight before I purchase one to try.
Thx!
