828 MK2 - XP Pro SP3 - Comp doesn't recognize it???

Hey all,
My system:
Windows XP Pro SP3 32 bit
(plenty or ram, hd space, etc.)
I am currently using an original 896 which works with my system. I understand the 828 mk2 (FW) use the same drivers, which are installed on this computer.
When I plug in the 828 mk2 the comp doesn't even recognize it. If I power up the 828 mk2 and then attach the FW cable, the 48 Khz flashes endlessly, and the comp still doesn't recognize it.
I know it's not the FW cable. I've also tried to connect the 828 mk2 to my laptop, Windows XP Pro SP2 32 bit, and it doesn't recognize it either.
What is going on?
I should add, that when I turn it on (without being plugged into the computer), the LED lights don't do their 'dance' on the meters, only the top row of red lights light up for a second and then go out. [Checked the fuse and it's fine.]
Then the 48Khz lights up and stays steady.
My goal is to be able to run the 828 mk2 on my laptop to use it as my mobile rig outside of the studio. Also, I'd like to use it daisy chained to my 896 for additional inputs in my studio, as well as to make headphone mixes.
Please help,
Shaun
