Okay, if not a laptop, recommend me a PC to:
*interface with my motu 8pre
*eat a lot of vst's
*handle 20 to 30 tracks
*have low latency
*handle audio with effects added to perhaps as much as 10 tracks

or better yet, recommend me a good build to handle the above.

budget 1k to 2k

The skies the limit... you have so many choices but the best would be an i7 intel and mobo.

It's not that people don't want to be helpful mate it's just that your question is so far reaching it's impossible to answer succinctly. The only thing to watch for is if you are using firewire make sure it has a compatible chipset (see theads passim).

Audio processing isn't a very demanding application and there isn't really any device currently on the market that will not do what you want.

If you are so disinterested in how this •••• works you didn't know this already I suggest you buy a Mac. That's what most people in your position do.

If you think you might develop an interest as your experience and skills increase then build your own windows desktop or rack mount. Don't get an i7. They run too hot at 140W and that means fans and therefore noise. Get a i3. I'd get the 64 bit version of Windows and 6Gb memory but you could manage just as well with XP 32 bit and 4Gb. Discs, DVD writers etc etc buy the cheapest 'cos it don't really make any difference.

If you want to be real cutting edge then invest in one of the new Intel Atom powered micro ITX boards. They are plenty powerful enough and don't have, or need, either a graphics or CPU fan. The power supply is also silent.

If you have a more specific question please feel free to ask but at the moment your request is too open ended.
