Fastest thing going except for an actual RAM drive. They cost more but it will increase the performance of your machine considerably.

What's the expected life of SSDs compared to mechanical ones?

Dunno the lifespan, but another IMO advantage of SSD's is the RAM virtual memory that OSX always takes has got to be improved big time. I think if you can afford it SSD is the way to go, and hopefully in a few years a 500GB 2.5" SSD will come in at under $1000.

The first Solid State Drive released did have problems, just ask people who bought the first mac book AIR's. They don't like constant writing and re-writing to the same sectors in the drive. But I have heard the newer models are better.
They do have good read/write speeds but if you use you laptop a lot. Like storing and deleting files or even updating files I would stick to standard HDD.
