Routing PC sound with CueMix

I'm having problem understanding some basics in CueMix, I guess, but I'd like to have my "PC Sound" (that is for example a CD playing), routed so I can hear it at the same time as I hear my audio tracks playing in Sonar.

At the moment I have Sonar playing audio, and the output sound is routed to SPDIF. But, I cannot hear a CD playing on the PC, at the same time.

Using XP Pro, MOTU Ultralite MKIII.

Well. I'm on a ULH, Vista 64 & Ableton but I hate to see a post go unanswered.

I just tried what you propose and didn't have any problem. Even with the two apps using different drivers. Which surprised me.

What you may have forgotten to do is check that your default audio playback device in windows is the same as the one you have specified in SONAR.

If it's not that i think you will have to provide additional info.

Cheers & gl.

Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate it.

In the MOTU Audio Console, I have set :
Phones assign Analog 3-4
Main out assign Analog 3-4
Return assign Analog 3-4

In Windows XP Control panel, the Sound playback default device is Analog 3-4

At first I don't get sound but on the Mixes tab in CueMix, I change the Bus to Analog 3-4 (from Main 1-2) and then I get sound.

When I play my synth, which is sending to Digital In on the Ultralite, I see the blue light coming up on 3 "Mixes" (1, 3, and 4) - not sure what is happening there, how can there be 3?

Am I understanding right, that I can assign 8 different inputs to 8 different outputs, simaltaneously? So 8 mixes are working at the same time? How would I assign 2 synths coming into 2 different inputs, say Analog 1-2, and Digital IN, to come out of the same output?

I also notice that when I play WAV files back in Sound Forge, that only happens on Analog 1-2, not Analog 3-4 ... how can that be?

Finally, I notice some glitches when sound forge is open along with Cue Mix, and that when I minimise Cue Mix the PC crashes. I don't have up-to-date drivers, as I had such a hard time getting things to work at all when I stared off, I am afraid to try and change the drivers again to the newest version. But, should I do this?

Thanks for any advice or comments :-)

Q1) The info you need is on page 63 of the manual. 'if an input is available for one bus it will still be available for other busses'.

You have probably got assigned the same input to 3 mix busses.

Q2) Again page 63 is your friend. 'It might be useful to think of each mix bus as some number of inputs all mixed down to a stereo output pair.'

Try assigning both inputs to the same mix bus.

Q3) Don't know about Soundforge but Live and ASIO drivers ignores whatever is the windows default playback device and always defaults to analog 1-2. Assuming soundforge is similar then select the output pair you require in the application preferences.

Q4) Yes. Current drivers appear to be stable and unless you are on the same version as everyone else it will be hard to get support.

When you do so it might be a good idea to manually remove MOTU software and drivers using windows first. Then reset the ULH to factory (bottom left, page 36). Then you know exactly where you are.

Hi Ronald, Thanks for your advice, and sorry for late response, I have been away.

I still am having problems understanding the CueMix routing, but I think its my lack of knowledge more than anything. I have to study more, busses etc ....

Having said that, I did upgrade my drivers, and there was a noticeable improvement in performance, so certain issues appear to be the result of old drivers. Now, in SoundForge, the sound does play back on the correct channels Analog 3-4, not 1-2. Must be something to do with the drivers.

I do have a new problem though now. I can record audio fine inside Sonar, but when using SoundForge to record live audio, I get a loud buzzing sound, and playing back my keyboard is just a noise. I have no idea how to troubleshoot that ... I presume it must be something to do with the Ultralite, but ... any ideas?

... re-installed Soundforge, and now seems OK again ... sensitive beast is it not, this Ultralite?
