I just have to say (like many others) how great Bidule is.

I have been running DP every day for the last two months in tandem with Bidule, loading up Bidule with every VI and loading none in DP. What a smooth way to work. DP never crashes, Saves are instant (or short), everything is just nice. And if DP does crash for some reason, there's no waiting for the re-load of VI's when you boot DP back up.

Just wanted to throw some good vibes this way.

Is Bidule easy to set up? I've been wanting to try it but some of the examples I've read on how to set it up seem confusing and convoluted and I don't want to spend a lot of time being frustrated.

Hey Dan,

It's not hard, but it's not the most straight forward thing, either. First, install the free Rewire part from Propellerhead:

(and install Bidule)

Then, open DP and make a MIDI track and an Aux track. For the Aux track Input, choose a Plogue Bidule Device input. After you do that, then launch Bidule and it should load in Rewire Mode. (If you don't choose an input for the Aux track first, Bidule won't load in Rewire mode) Then you just load your VI's into Bidule and configure the VI's MIDI in's to the Bidule Rewire module and the VI's audio out's to the Bidule Rewire output. Lastly, on your MIDI track in DP you choose the correct Bidule MIDI channel to play the VI and then when you play it, it's audio will come to your Aux track in DP.

If you use the Bidule Rewire MIDI module as the MIDI in to the VI's, automatic delay compensation kicks in. If you use a Bidule module under the MIDI Devices tab in Bidule, it works but with no delay compensation.

Also, you have to launch Bidule without DP running and go into Bidule's Preferences and set the check box under Rewire to Enable Rewire Mixer, and bump up your Rewire MIDI Ports and Channels if you want. I think that's all.

Believe me, brother, it's worth the minor hassle of setting it up, and once you get used to loading VI's into it, you'll never go back. Kontakt 3.5 and 4.0 use a memory manager to load more than 4 gigs into a setup, which is awesome if you are using a big orchestral setup using a bunch of Kontakt VI's. I don't know if Kontakt's memory manager works when it is in DP, because I do not see it loading when I do use it inside of DP.

I did say that, didn't I? Never say never, eh?

Really, I've bogged down DP for the last three years with tons of VI's and it would crash more often than one would like, but it just doesn't crash (because of VI's ) running it this way.

I'm interested in trying this, too. I assume that the Standalone version, rather than the AU version is being used?

I'm really confused after looking over the Plogue site.

Yes, standalone with DP via Rewire.

What is your confusion regarding?

Will rewiring with Bidule allow simultaneous rewiring with Reason? Or is it a one or the other deal?

Ah, good question. I do not use Reason or any other Rewire program with Bidule, so personally I cannot speak to that.

And perhaps the same "anyone" who knows the answer to that question can tell me if it is at all possible to use Reason Refills in DP without having to purchase Reason. I've been told you can use the Refills in DP using Bidule, but I don't really want to spend the additional $350 bucks on Reason. It gets pricey.

Got it going no problem thanks to your help. I loaded a ton of stuff into Bidule that would normally bog DP down, but DP is crusising along just fine. Very cool. This will make things much easier to organize and switching out instruments is a breeze.

I've been wanting to do this for quite some time but was a little chicken. Thanks for makin' me cross the road.

Now I just need to learn how to best utilize Bidule to get the most out of it.

I'm very glad to hear that it has gone well for you so far. I am now encouraged to proceed with this myself.

Other than that it was a piece of cake.
