DP7.1 Working!

Just to let you know that it is possible to have a happy experience with 7.1.
This is the best one since 5.13 for me.
I post this here because I see so many users with problems.
I think there are solutions.

Small comfort if you are having beachballs and crashes.

For me, this version fixed many issues.
I would recommend it to 7.02 folks who were having problems.
I will certainly post again if the bugs come to visit.

Good luck to all

MOTU just posted a new Firewire driver yesterday. I installed it late last night and am overjoyed to report that I think it's solved my crashing and instability issues. More research today, but I think I'm now qualified to post in the 'DP7.1 Working' thread and happy and relieved to do so.

Troubleshooting was interesting, but glad it's over with for the time being!! After working with all three versions 6.02, 7.02, and 7.1 yesterday, I don't know if 7.1 is 'zippier' for me than 6.02, but it certainly seems stable now as I made it perform tasks that previously would cause it to vaporize and 7.1 handled it with flying colors and.... music!

I'd heartily recommend installing the new FW driver if you have issues with DP7.

Tobor,

Is that an 828 original in your sig? I'm asking because an earlier driver caused major havoc with mk1s.

Yes, an original 828. I recently switched back to it a week ago from my Duet and encountered immediate kernel panic- couldn't even boot my computer with the 828 on.

I found another driver which enabled me to boot up, but I was having frequent 7.02/7.1 crashes. This new driver seems to finally make everything functional. Unless last night was a dream, I think everything in 7.1/828 seems ready for prime time. More testing today.

Just an update.
Another crash free day on 7.1.
8 hours with many plugs and various VIs.
Lots of recording and editing.
I'm still holding my breath, but it seems to be stable.

That seems to be the case for many. Some folks are having a flawless experience (Shooshie, for example). Others are are having frequent crashes. I'm in the middle somewhere, with just an occasional crash. If some are having good luck, it means that it's POSSIBLE to have a stable system. The trick is to figure out what's causing the problems for others. I just did a project where I had 5 songs with 10 tracks that needed nearly identical plug-ins for each song. The new Save Insert Settings feature was awesome. It saved me a real good chunk of time. I want to get to the bottom of this and get rockin with 7.1! I'm not convinced the problem lies with MOTU. I could be something as simple as a conflict with Rosetta or something (Hmmm, time to experiment with that one). Thank you to all the nice folks here who are helping to get to the bottom of this. 8)

Another crash free day.
Saves seem snappier?
What am I doing right?
I'm a happy camper.

Opened two 5.13 projects in DP 7.1 today - both very high track counts, lots of plugs. Waited a good fifteen minutes on each one, just to make sure all the
soundbites were analyzed and processed and overviews were rebuilt.

Bad news - I installed Waves 7 yesterday, and since all my Waves plugs were
5.97 beta in the original 5.13 projects - all instances of Waves plugs were
gone. Ditto for any tracks that had T-racks version 1 plugs - those tracks
had no plugs on them either. I had recently installed T-racks version 1.x
plugs, so again I think this is a case of DP 7.1 doesn't load versions of plugs that are no longer on my system.

And as I mentioned in another post, Stillwell Rocket Compressor's GUI is
a no-show in 7.1, although the plug-in itself seems to be working.

Good news - once the soundbites were all processed and analyzed, playback
and graphics were smooth. I'm really enjoying being able to assign any plug-in to default to real-time if I want. Awesome. Being able to create
plug-in load sets so that certain ones won't load - awesome again (or is it "awesomer"? Not sure...).

7.1 seems to be less CPU-intensive than 5.13. Great news there. It even seems to sound a bit better - but that might be just a psychological effect
of it being a "new" version of DP.

That's not good news about losing Waves settings, for sure. Are you saying that the plugin itself doesn't show up? Or that the plugin is there, but its setting is lost? Somewhere back there -- I think it was around 5.97 or 6.0 -- Waves fixed something so that their settings would be sure and load from previous versions. The plugins had been loading, but old settings had been getting lost. Waves fixed it.

I wonder if this is another case of needing to be able to do that, and whether it will require Waves to fix it, or if it is a DP problem? And will it mean another 18 months of finger pointing while Waves decides whether or not to support DP anymore, like last time.

Yes, the insert slots where the old Waves plug-ins were are empoty. I can easily instantiate a Waves plug-in again in the empty slot, save it, everything is cool.

To tell you the truth, I need to remix these projects so it isn't bothering me that much.

I jumped in and so far all is good. All my plugins and old files from 5.13 seem to be running with no problem. I don't know if this helps anyone but I completely erased all of 5.13 before I updated to 7.1. I haven't recorded anything but I have mixed and used some VI's without a crash. I loved 5.13 but in the last couple of months I was having a lot of crashes with older projects from previous versions that I was going back to, so far they have loaded and ran perfect in 7.1.

This has been my experience too. After my system drive failed in December,
and was replaced, and was followed by an OS crash and RAM failure, DP 5.13
was not the same reliable workhorse it had been for me, it just started
quitting for no reason, and it was quitting often. I had re-installed it
several times, reinstalled all plugs and VI's several times, trashed prefs,
rebuilt the Audio Unit info cache, removed old receipts, fixed permissions -
nothing resolved the sudden quits. It got to the point where I was afraid to
start a session, so I installed 7.1 (and updated to Waves 7). Super glad I
did. And as Waxman could tell you, I'm one of those chickens who waits forever to move to a new version of DP.

Everything that I've read so far about troubles with 7.1 points to third-party plug-ins and VI's. And if memory serves me correctly, this has
always been the case with every new update of DP. Even so, with 7.02 and now 7.1, it seems the overall number of complaints about third-party plugs/VI's has been the lowest I've ever seen, compared to previous updates.
