Obvious iPad developer: Mackie??? Virtual Mackie Control?
As I return from trying to sell an independent developer on supporting DP with their ProRemote solution... (see this topic: http://apps.folabs.com/forum/message/in ... t=1&last=0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )
Then it dawned on me. Why the heck doesn't MACKIE jump on this and make a virtual Mackie Control for iPad? It's their baby after all. Why don't they get out in front of the curve and third party developers and just make the definitive iPad app/server combo? Thoughts?
BTW, please visit that forum above... take the time to register... and let Alex from Far Out Labs know that there are many DP users out here. I think he's under the popular misconception that there aren't many of us. BTW, they confirm elsewhere on their board that ProRemote works on iPad, but it will be time before they use the expanded screen real estate.

I've been wondering about this myself.
I don't buy consumer devices and don't have a laptop lifestyle, so the only personal interest in iPad is if it can serve as a control surface. It seems inevitable that someone will make this possible, much more cheaply than Lemur.
It hadn't occurred to me that Mackie would be a contender, but from James' comments I can see why they might end up being the first.

Good idea. I purchased ProTransport awhile back and had a similar experience.

I spent 7.99 on the ProTransport. Of course it seemed to work really well with Logic, but is terrible at this point with Digital Performer. There was an old thread on their forum where a DP user offered to "loan" the developer a copy of DP so he could debug it. It needs a lot of work, and I offered to help him test it.KEVORKIAN wrote:Good idea. I purchased ProTransport awhile back and had a similar experience.
Part of the issue I think might be that AFAIK, DP still doesn't recognize MIDI devices that appear automatically like USB keyboards, or the ProRemote driver. This necessitates the old trick of creating a MIDI device manually and connecting it to the virtual device so DP can "see" it.

It's a great idea. Doesn't really need Mackie to do it though, does it? Lots of developers make Mackie Control compatible devices, and it would be good if one of them thought about the possibilities. In fact, Mackie may avoid the self-cannibalization and leave it to someone else.

As I recall, SixStringGeek who wrote Jambalaya mentioned he might do it and he has the programming chops to make it fly. Maybe he'll take it on if we get enough commitments to buy the app? Certainly we could help with testing. It would be pretty cool if this community could come up with a killer DP SPECIFIC APP, that is not just a knock off or adaptation of something for another DAW, but something unabashadly optimized for DP. An iPad app that would make users of other DAWs envious. For example, different pages with ability to open and save Projects... who knows. I guess what I mean is something designed from the ground up for DP!bayswater wrote:It's a great idea. Doesn't really need Mackie to do it though, does it? I'd be down to buy that if SixStringGeek is up for it!James Steele wrote:Maybe he'll take it on if we get enough commitments to buy the app?
