DP and Traveler, advice needed

I've been asked to put together a rig for some basics to be cut at an older house in Seattle. It's a huge place with high ceilings and the acoustically speaking I'm not to concerned about meeting the challenges.
Since it's impractical for me to tear out all of my gear and relocate I was hoping to go with an (for me) untried system.
I can borrow a Motu traveler and a g4 1.67 laptop with DP 4.6.
Using mic pres and converters I could easily bring that would in theory give me the 12 channels of basics via light pipes into the traveler.
Thankfully it'll all be live with no headphones required.
The big uncertainty I have is the firewire bus. If I'm using that for the audio interface streaming 12 tracks at 24/44.1 will it also support an external hard drive?
What do you think?
