Hi all. Scratching my head and have no clue on how I should
connect and route my old Yamaha SPX90 external effects unit.
The Yamaha has 2 outputs, 1 input.
(Open image link in new window to see the whole back of the unit)
Im also running a PRE8 connected with ADAT to my 828mk3.
Can someone please help me out and tell me:
* What cable should go where from my Yamaha?
* How do I set up the Yamaha in my CueMix? (If its even possible?)
* How do i set it up for use in Ableton Live 8?
Thx in advance! =)

In theory, you should be able to use one of your outputs (say analog eight) as a send to the effect and then bring it back in through two of your inputs. Just be careful to not create a feedback loop in cuemix. As long as you're not using the same output bus for your headphones or monitors as you are for the effect send then it shouldn't be a problem.
Now, I don't have Ableton but in Cubase I set up outputs and inputs in the external effect tab in VST connections, then I can insert that effect just like a plugin. You will, however, lose whatever channels you are using to bring the effect back in through as inputs for anything else but as long as you're not needing all your inputs then you should be alright.
Peace,
Billy

Mandobilly has it right, and not just in theory... the setup he describes works great for tracking with my Lexicon outboard FX box, as it will with your Yamaha. In DP it is also easy to create a send within the DP mixer that is assigned to a specific output on the MOTU interface, allowing one to use the external FX when mixing as well.

Do you ever use your Lexicon like this in Cuemix while tracking?
I have a TC Electronics unit with SPDIF in/outs and was thinking this would be a great work around to Cuemix's Reverb being limited to lower sample rates, if I was wanting to record at higher rates that is.

I monitor thru CueMix when tracking with my 828mkII and use the Lexicon all the time. Set up is simple, and I leave the sends pre-set, adjusting reverb level with the return in the mater bus. I have another device on my SPDIF I/O, so the Lex uses analog I/O. Singers love the "talent" provided by 'verb, which is monitor-only while tracking.
