Hi Pass Filter on the Master Fader
Good idea? Bad idea? I am cutting everything below 50. I am doing this because I seem to have more headroom when mixing. Once I am ready to print the mix, I will try to cut less.

You might get better results using the HPF on the individual audio tracks. That way you can selectively retain information below 50Hz in the tracks that you want it (ie. kick drum) for a clean, punchy bottom end.

Plus when I'm finished a mix and I'm bouncing out a 44/16 file I will HPF out everything below 30Hz with a 12 or 18 Db slope which I find helps get some extra headroom and clarity in the mix if I'm mastering it myself.
Creativity, some digital stuff and analogue things that go boom. crackle, bits of wood with strings on them that go twang

Re: Hi Pass Filter on the Master Fader
I would suggest the decision as to when and where to high pass is largely based on the nature of the material being mixed. If uber loud is essential, than roll of as many lows as you can stand and you'll get a payback in perceived loudness before clipping.
Personally, if at all possible, I prefer to give all those subwoofers out there something to get excited about.
