DP 6.02 and Vienna Ensemble Pro on G5 quad?

Hi,
Has anyone successfully gotten DP 6.02 and Vienna Ensemble Pro to operate properly on G5 quad loaded with 16 gigs of memory and running OS 10.5.8 , as opposed to using 2 seperate computers?
It is my understanding that VEPro runs in full 64bit mode on the G5 quad. If this is the case, it should work well.
I intend to try it myself, but was hoping that someone else, especially from the more experienced group could possibly post their results and/or opinions on the matter before I start moving and installing all of the available apps and libraries.
I will most definitely post my results for those who might be interested.
Thank you kindly

I don't have a G5 Quad and hope that someone can answer that part of your question soon, but I'm wondering about this full 64-bit mode on the G5. There are certain Intels (Duo Core) which don't support full 64-bit mode even with Snow Leopard booted in 64-bit mode. It might take a Core 2 Duo machine in SL before we're really running full-wack 64.
VE Pro will offer you a special "server" that runs in the background that will claim memory space outside of DP's 3.5-4GB max. The net result is akin to full 64-bit memory addressing, so you should be able to put much of your 16GB RAM to good use.
FWIW, I've run VE3 in 10.4.11 on my G5 2.5 dual and it worked quite nicely. Same thing for 6.02/6.03 in 10.5.8 on a MacPro Quad with VE3 and VE Pro.

Hi Frodo,
Thank you very much for your response.
In your reply you stated " There are certain Intels (Duo Core) which don't support full 64-bit mode even with Snow Leopard booted in 64-bit mode. "
Do you know what Macs those are? I came across an ad for a Mac Pro quad, 2.0. Is it not possible to upgrade those with a faster cpu, and if so, will they run in 64 bit mode?
Thanks again,
Doctor

As far as I know, only the Core 2 Duo Macs will boot in 64-bit mode when running Snow Leopard, and not the Duo Cores. This means Macs released after 2008. One would need to check the specs of the CPU to determine whether it's fully 64-bit compatible.
The 2.0 MacPro was the bottom line replacement for the last of the G5s. The other models offered at that time were the 2.66 and the 3.0 dual. These are all Duo Cores-- ie: not Core 2 Duos and not bootable in 64-bit mode with Snow Leopard.
"Core 2 Duo" is the operative 64-bit word du jour.
Even so, DP is not 100% 64-bit and neither are all plugins available for Snow Leopard. However, for the way Vienna Ensemble Pro works right now, 100% 64-bit is not necessary. VE Pro (unlike a lot of other 32-bit apps and plugs) access memory outside of that its host, so again the net effect is that of 64-bit memory access with a bit of "mock 64-bit" trickery.
If full 64-bit is what you're after, I wouldn't waste money now on a new Mac because the software is not completely up to speed yet. VE Pro might be on the latest machines, but it will take DP and everything else you use to be there at that point-- and they're not as of today. I believe that they will get there eventually, but just not today.
Still, VE Pro in 10.5.x will work swimmingly based on what I've seen on my own system and other user reports.
Keep your G5 Quad. Put it too good use until you are sure that you need a new machine. At that point, I would avoid a used MacPro unless it's a Core 2 Duo and not Duo Core.

Thanks again Frodo. That was great advice.
This will allow me to use the G5 four production and the iMac 3.06 for writing, animation rendering, and other types of audio manipulation.

Frodo, if you'd be so kind, could you provide direction as to which version/build of VE3 you were able to successfully install on 10.4.11/G5? The download we have wouldn't install on 10.4.9, unless it was the difference between 10.4.9 and 10.4.11 that prevented it from installing.
Any info, links etc. would be much appreciated.
Thanks,

Sorry for the long delay in responding. I lost track of this thread!
I am using VE3 3.0.4017. It works in 10.4 and later. I'm wondering if a fresh download didn't resolve the issue already for you (since so much time has passed). Otherwise, repair permissions before installing, and make sure you are doing the installation into your root directory's Applications Folder.
