Free KORE Player sounds - disappointment however

Post by James Steele »

First... NI has made free sounds available for the KORE 2 player for the Holidays...

http://bit.ly/5sDwuS

Now the disappointment: even though I checked and I have the KORE 2 player on my G5, the installer for the free sounds REQUIRES INTEL!! It will not install on my G5. Why oh why is this the case if it is just installing free instruments/sounds and NOT the KORE Player??? An Intel only installer for sounds? :(

When you open the installer can you select the "show files" option from the file menu? If so you can see where the files are supposed to go and then use Pacifist to manually extract them and place them there...

I've noticed this anomaly with Tiger (yes, still on Tiger), where Leopard and above installer icons expand like they're going to open and then, nothing happens, but I have no idea what that has to do with non-Intel computers actually running Leopard. And I'm on an Intel Mac! Are the sounds in an installer, or just a folder? And does NI's site say anything about not allowing you to install sounds on a non-Intel Mac, or at least offer an alternative? I can't imagine they're quite ready to cut out G5 users just yet, considering how many people are still using them for music production.

Had the same problem. I also bought Absynth 5 and can't use it on my G5. Very annoying. It blows my mind that a computer that is just a little over 3 years old is now considered "obsolete" and that a company like NI is just ignoring all of us who want to use their products but can't because of this. I mean it's one thing when Apple doesn't provide support for older platforms such as is happening with Logic 9. They have an agenda which is to get you to buy another Mac! How does it serve NI to screw over dedicated customers this way? So now I have the last PPC version of the Kore Player installed but can't buy sounds for it because of this installer BS! Again, how could this possibly benefit NI?

Any workarounds that people know of would be appreciated.

Does the installer even open?

If so...

Re: Free KORE Player sounds - Found a workaround

Post by pjgmusic »

I just found a sort of workaround. Right click on Compilation Vol. 2 Installer Mac.mpkg and choose Show package contents

You will see a folder that says Contents. Inside it is a folder called packages. Double-click on both of the .pkg files and it should install fine.

It worked for me. I'm very happy about that. I wonder if it will work with my Absynth 5 download. I'll have to try and will report back.

That worked great; thanks for posting that.

I had resolved myself to not being able to install this until a new Mac. It didn't occur to me that only the MPKG file was incompatible and not the actual installers within it.

I'm glad it worked, but be careful. It worked for me with the free compilation, but I don't know if it will work with other sound packages that you might purchase for the Kore Player. Please let me know if it does. I was just about to buy the whole Absynth series for Kore Player to tide me over until I can actually use my copy of Absynth (Grrr), but I'm afraid to do that until I can determine whether the same workaround will work with the purchased sounds.

Re: Free KORE Player sounds - an addendum

Post by pjgmusic »

While my workaround (see above) for the free Kore Compilation vol.2 worked and I was able to install the sounds and play them on my G5 with Kore Player, I am very sad to report that I did not have the same success with Absynth 5. :x

I tried the same workaround, bypassing the installer and going directly to the individual .pkg files. And it worked in the sense that everything did install. However, when I clicked on the actual Absynth app, I got the message that it was an intel only app. Sigh.....

Oh well, at least the sounds installed. Hopefully someone will try this with some other Koresounds and report success, so that at least I can access some of the sounds with Kore Player.

I really do wish that NI would show a bit more consideration for those of us still using G5's though. There are people still creating and working on these machines. It's not like we're talking about Amigas or Commodore 64's or even Mac ii's here. As far as I'm concerned, these are still relevant machines and there's no valid reason I can see that you should not be able to use them with the latest versions of these plugins!

The Absynth sound packs are compatible with previous standalone versions of Absynth and don't need Kore Player or the latest Absynth 5. I had no trouble installing them.

I'd love to install the Absynth sounds into Absynth. I've right-clicked and found the 'Contents' etc. as described above.

My bugaboo is that I'm on Tiger so can't install Kore Player. I also don't want to install a lot of content I can't use, or duplicates my Kontact data (I have Komplete 5), so it probably limits me to the Absynth patches.

How and where do I install 'just' the Absynth material?

Thanks!

The Kore Player is Tiger compatible, unless they've updated it recently (I am on Tiger).

The installer puts the data under Absynth and references that in Kore Player. Not sure if it requires Kore Player to be present and/or installs it if not, since I have had the free Kore Player for eons.

Kore Player does not write the data twice. Some of the Kore Packs may be redundant with Kontakt as not everyone has Kontakt, so in those cases the content may be partially duplicated as it's a subset for free.

The Absynth add-ons, however, were available before Kore was around -- as were a few other sound packs that are current sold as Kore Sound Packs. I think it is only the multi-engine Sound packs that directly install as Kore libraries. The FM8 add-on is another example of this.

Thanks mh. They must have upgraded Kore 2 Player as it now states it is for 10.5/10.6 only:

Kontact 4 player also requires Leopard or above as well. I used my holiday discount coupon on Scarbee P-Bass, which can play in Kontact 3.5, which I have. I might have chosen the J-Bass, more recently "N.I.'d", but it requires Kontact 4 or Kontact 4 Player.

Oh well. I guess "progress" marches on.

They might have needed to update Kore Player to be compatible with any new sound packs they come out with that take advantage of some of the new features in Kontakt 4. That would be my guess.

Yes thanks!!! I will try that. I may have to do the download again. I think I trashed the download in my disappointment.
