After several failed attempts I tried again today to install Snow Leopard to an FireWired external hard drive from my wife's MacIntel.

I get the green check mark at the end of installation then the obligatory restart.

On the restart the apple logo shows up and it sits with the paddle going and going then a circle with a slash thru it pops up on the screen. Oh oh!! The paddle keeps spinning for at least 15 minuets.


I then force a shut down ( pull the power plug ) and wait at least five minutes , replug the power plug and restart holding down the option key and selecting the internal MacIntel hard drive and get my self back to the internal hard drive of the MacIntel ( Tiger: 10.4x ).

The icon of the FW external hard drive pops up on the desk top. I open the FW external hard drive icon/folder and see that the only folders missing are the ownership folder ( the little house )in the Users folder.

Of course the ownership folder is missing because on the restart from the installation process i was not allowed to set up an ownership.



Is there someway I can transfer the ownership folder from another FireWired external hard drive that has Leopard installed ?

Incidentally the FW external hard drive with Leopard was not on during the installation therefore the MacIntel could not have been confused.

Suggestions/help/advice please.

Is the Snow leopard DVD installer disk defective?

Check the ownership of the FW drive (ctrl-click) get info. Make sure that under ownership and permissions that you can Read and Write, and under Details make sure that "Ignore Ownership on this Volume" is unchecked. Boot drives should always have ownership.

Can i just change those at the "get info" window and it will stick when i close the window ? or do i require a special software ?

Sorry to hear about this. I don't know if I can offer a solution, but when you update the OS, especially to something as different as Snow Leopard, it's important to understand that that spinning paddle upon restart is part of the installation, which doesn't end before restarting. To force a shut down is to abort the installation. The green check mark is a little misleading. If the installation did not complete itself or if some files were corrupted in the process, I wonder if a reinstall wouldn't be in order?

When you see the spinning paddle after install, walk away from the machine and let it do its thing.

All you need is the "Get Info" window. I sure hope this helps.
