No MOTU 8Pre device found on firewire port Windows XP

Dear friends,

I have been using an 8Pre module for almost 2 years in my desktop running Windows XP. I had some issues with the firewire driver at the beggining but i installed the upated firewire/usb2 driver back then and all worked properly until today.

I plugged in again the firewire cable and i noticed that no MOTU device was found on the OS. I did all the combinations, reboot the MOTU, turn it on before and after turning on the PC but did not work.

I noticed that Converted and Interface green leds are on at the beginning but then Interface led turned off and just the Converter and 44.1 leds are on so the MOTU is also not seeing the PC and is on Converter mode. I went to MOTU web page and installed the latest driver version but still not working. I read in a forum that sometimes the firewire ports get defective on the device and need to be repair by MOTU support team.

Could you please let me know if you have had this issue and a work around? I live in El Salvador central america so sending this box to the USA will be very expensive

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Jorge

Firewire on Windows is a very picky, almost "moody" in my opinion. I have had various issues with this over the years on multiple computer ranging from hard-drives won't mount, then they will, then they won't, etc to interfaces just dropping offline, to well---just not working at all. You need to try another computer to verify if the issue is the computer--or if it's the interface. Chances are, your interface might be fine---but it could be bad, too.

Dear BradLyons,

Thanks for the reply. I will retest the MOTU 8Pre in another PC tonight using last MOTU driver they have online.

I have a big doubt, can the firewire ports of the MOTU get damaged if you plugin incorrectly (upside down) the firewire cable? I know this happened since my friend did it like that in both ports and after that is that the MOTU was no more recognized by the PC, i noticed that when i checked the cable and saw it upsidedown. Can they get damaged for doing that?

I appreciate a lot your assistance.

Thanks

Jorge
