Bounce to Disk -- I need some help...

Hi Folks,
I've got a large orchestral piece, maybe 30 instruments (kontakt, MSI, Ivory) and it's about 8 min long.
I've highlighted everything, and selected Bounce to Disk, and followed the instructions in the manual (I thought) ... and I end up with a blank .wav file.
It's the right size and length (90mb, 8'30") but it's just blank. I've played it with iTunes and Windows audio player...nothing.
What am I doing wrong? I did this once before with a simple piano piece, and I recall seeing the resulting audio sound file in tracks, and it worked great.
This time, nothing, except the correct bounced file in the Audio folder...that's 90mb of blank.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Fred

Check that:
Your tracks are play enabled;
Your tracks are play selected for the entire region you want to bounce;
You are bouncing from the correct audio outs!
The latter being the most common mistake.

Have you rendered the VI tracks as audio? From your signature it looks like you're in DP 5, which doesn't pre-render VIs (which DP 6 can do). So you have to render the VI tracks as audio before you bounce.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPS!
Ok, thanks for that guys. Let me go back to the drawing board.
No, didn't render VI tracks to audio first. But they are all VI tracks.... so same deal?
So you mean I need to basically play them (record them) to a stereo audio track first?
I'm not at all sure I'm at the right part of the manual, I'm using DP5 and am at Part 9: Mastering: Bounce to Disk; Mastering. Is that the right place to be looking?
Like I said, I've done this before, maybe I'll go back to that file and try a simple one first. I'm missing something...and I don't see much about "Render" in the manual...just mentions "render quality menu" under Interapplication MIDI.
Thanks, I'll spend some time on this later tonight ...
Fred

Select the
AUDIO track and the
MIDI track(s) - (and the region you want to bounce) for the VI and select
FREEZE from the Audio menu.
On my system (and I assume yours and everyones) you can only FREEZE one VI at a time. So if you have several in the mix, you will have several frozen tracks to create and THEN bounce to disk with the warnings I listed above for outputs, regions, selection of tracks, etc.
This may be where someone with pre-rendering experience may be of help...
Anyone?

An alternative to freezing is to route the outputs of VIs to the input of an audio track, record-enable that audio track, and record in real-time. The advantage to this is you can render many tracks at once. I usually render each instrument to its own audio track in case I want to change the mix later, but I think you could route them all to the same track.

Oh brother....
This is one of those deals where I'm glad I found the problem, but really...how stupid can you get.
Earlier today I "cleaned up" the Tracks Column Setup (in a different piece) and deselected Input. So I had no input to the new audio track! That was the problem.
I just tried it, and it worked like a charm. I just recorded the Ivory VI into an audio track, then played back the audio track -- sounds great.
...now don't tell anybody I did this, ok?
Thanks!
Fred

Your secrets are safe with us. Their in the vault!
Also, thanks BobK for the very useful info re freezing/BTD vs real-time, especially whit multiple VIs.
DOH!

Hey Bob I haven't tried this but say you have 4 active VI's and you make 4 Stereo audio tracks and route the IO track as described, I do this all the time BTW, anyway then, you select input on the stereo audio tracks and then, Have not tried this, try to bounce to disk without recording the files. Does this work for BTD?

No, that wouldn't work in DP 5. You have to render the VIs first.
DP 6's pre-rendering is intended to simplify and speed up the process by rendering the instruments in the background as you go. Having removed DP 6 from my main music computer, I haven't explored it, but my impression from reading posts around here is that it doesn't quite live up to its promise. I'm guessing it would potentially slow down an older machine like mine.
I'm curious if pre-rendering actually generates a visible Soundbite or if it works 'behind the scenes.' Anybody?

I am seeing and hearing of this more and more. Those of us who have paid for DP 6 are not using it. If/when MOTU releases an update, and if it is a paid update, will anyone actually do it? I'd certainly download a free update, but I'd wait on a paid one given I and so many others are not using DP 6. And if many users wait to buy it, will MOTU realize the errors of their ways? Will DP 5 be the last viable version?
Just a random thought.
I'll start a new thread in the rants section to float the idea.

Until they rework the GUI I'm on 5.13. The pull out menu was the killer for me and rearrangements of the small box selects to the right is a bust. Everything takes forever with slower workflow IMO. Thanks bob. Guess I'll keep on rendering as always.

Here's the new thread on the DP 5/DP 6/DP Next upgrade issue. I don't mean to hijack this thread for that purpose.
