8pre as a dumb mixer?

when i'm not recording or making music, i am generally running linux. i know there's no linux support for the 8pre, but can i just use it as a dumb mixer (analog-to-digital converter?) if it's not plugged into my computer? i'd like to be able to just plug in a bunch of instruments and jam without having to reboot my computer. i feel like this *should* be possible.
