MTP AV parallel port to USB converter

Post by chongo »

Hey all,
I'm considering getting a MTP AV. Looking into it, the older versions without USB are much cheaper. Does anyone have any experience with using a parallel to USB converter with this unit. Does it work?

Not sure how well that would work, if at all. I know that on Macs using a serial to USB adapter with a MIDI interface is dodgy at best. You would probably be better served looking into a PCI card with a parallel port.

I'm using an older laptop that has a parallel printer port, would that do or it is something completely different?

I'm not buying it. Will they take it back if it doesn't work. Will ALL functions work properly-- synchronization, etc. if you need it? Clockworks run correctly and communicate with it? How about sysex transmissions? Of course, I don't know... I just realized this was in the Windows forums and I'm a Mac guy, but in my case I bought an old serial Mac MTPII and networked it off my USB MTP/AV and basic MIDI functions work just fine, but you cannot complete any lengthy sysex transfers reliably from any of the ports on the networked interface... only on the one that is connected directly via USB.

I'd say be very careful about assuming this $10 adapter is going to work for MIDI applications. I'd think it's a bit different than a printer, etc.

I tried one under Windows XP and its internal drivers assumed the device connected was a printer. So completely useless.
