Is the Liquid Mix behaving with DP 6.02? [MAYBE]

Post by James Steele »

Just wondering if the Liquid Mix is behaving well with DP 6.02. I've seen some used and thinking about maybe getting one to take some of the load of my UAD-1 card.

Hi James,

It is behaving absolutely fine here, using OS 10.5.7, DP 6.02 and LiquidMix 2.3b16.

However I am running this on a Mac Pro using a PCI firewire card to lighten the load.

Cheers

no problems here ('08 macpro, 10.5.6)

just make sure you always run instances in real time

and always connect LM and run LM Manager before you start DP

Everything cool here on a Mac Pro 8core.
Follow previous post instructions...

You're gonna like the emulations.
I also use a UAD and love it.
But, the LM has other great sounding stuff you can't get with the UAD..... yet.
Waiting for Manley on UAD..

That's good to know. I'm on a PPC Mac with Tiger. I just bought one off of eBay and in a way I think I lucked out as there was one used unit with some scratches for $375 last night, but when I looked just now Novamusik is blowing out seven B-stock units that they describe as in "MINT" condition for $399 with FREE shipping so I snagged one.

P.S. Part of the reason I wanted this is because I'd like to offload compressor functions to the Liquid Mix to free up the UAD-1. I made the mistake of trying the UAD Roland Space Echo emulation plug and dammit if it didn't sound just killer... but it seems like a real DSP hog on the UAD-1 card and in the one mix I had going it just slammed my CPU once I instantiated it. So the idea is to use LM for compression and save UAD for Plate 140, Precision Limiter, occasional LA-2A, etc. But darn... I guess now I have to buy the Roland plug... ugh... that thing is EXPENSIVE though. If UAD would blow it out for like $100 it would be no brainer, but $200 (after the 20% off this month) is kinda still a bit rough for a delay plug. Arghhhh!!!

I may stick with Dubstation for now. :(

Liquid mix is fine here too with DP 6.02.
I've been avoiding trying that roland space echo for UAD, knowing that I would have to buy it!

Well I don't have the UAD card but I hear the Space echo is fantastic but at least I don't have to buy it or miss it as I just use my REAL one :D

I've been using it lately for warming up vocals, just using the unit as a pre. That's right, not even using the delay or spring, just running into the pre and back out again completely dry and it adds something warm and round to the sound....

Ah I love the thing :D

Stephen, can you tell me exactly the brand of firewire PCI card you're using and if you would recommend it??

Hi there

I am using the Sonnet Tango Express combo FW400/USB2 PCI Express card. I use this only for the LiquidMix and my FW scanner. Works fine, and was relatively inexpensive. I have had good experience with Sonnet products, I also have eSATA cards for both my MacPro and my MacBook Pro.

Prior to this I used to have a Lacie FW800 card on my G5, which was OK, but I prefer the Sonnet. Also at the time I had to buy an expensive 9-6 pin FW cable.

I recently mixed a film soundtrack - in excess of 90 tracks and multiple surround submixes, running audio from an internal drive, DV video from an eSATA drive, Traveler and FW Video from the internal FW buss, and LiquidMix from the FW card, and it all worked without a hitch. Using DP 6.02.

Cheers

By the way, are all latency having to do with Liquid Mix compensated for transparently by DP automatic delay compensation? I would assume so, right?
