I just looked and found out my new Sony VAIO FW-390 uses a Ricoh chipset, which supposedly doesn't play well with firewire audio interfaces in general. I want to know if there are any members here that do use the Ricoh chipset with their MOTU firewire interface and is happy without problems?

It worked for me with my 4 pin out on a ThinkPad t400. But, I have had to pick through driver versions to get it going again after trying to daisy-chain my Glyph external HD to it. My other f/w in is through a Card Bus with the TI chipset. It runs Liquid Mix and is rock solid. If I don't try anything new, my Ultralite MK3 is good through the Ricoh. From other posts. its hit or miss. Good Luck.

My 828 Mk3 works with my Acer's Ricoh controller and the 3.6.8.1394 driver. But I bought an ExpressCard controller with TI chipset with which it works noticably better. I could even get the AVT third party fw drivers get to work with the TI card, which further helped to boost the performance. So be prepared to buy an extra controller if you're not satisfied with the Ricoh's performance or if it doesn't work at all.
