I've been in contact with MOTU tech support and they've been helpful but have not solved the issue. The 828 is not seen on the new computer. I also have an 8pre which I can connect with the same cable to the same FW port on the computer and it works just fine. The 828 works fine with the same cable hooked up to my wife's iMac. The 828 is fine, the cable is fine, the port is fine. So what can I do with preferences/drives/software that might fix this? Any ideas?

Completely reinstalled drivers. Noticed after trashing trashing everything before reinstalling the 8pre shows up in system profiler while the 828 still does not. Reinstalling drivers did not help. Any thoughts on FW chipset incompatibilities?

Thanks for all the helpful replies. A Sonnet PCI-e FW card (TI chipset?) fixed the problem.
