896HD Driver Trouble ..VERY STRANGE

I hate to repeat the same posts you may see on occasion but the trouble I am having is a tough one. I have my 896HD running via ASUS P4C motherboard and VIA 1394 firewire with XP Professional. Upgraded to Vista Ultimate and my Cubase 5 worked and played and things were essentially normal until I downloaded the Newest Firewire/USB2 MOTU drivers. Things went totally MUTE and now 3 1/2 weeks later despite all of the phone calls to TECH SUPPORT, I still have now in or output. As of today, I deleted every possible source of anty MOTU driver I can find and re-intalled the original drivers that came witht eh CD 4 years ago...nothing.
I can see VU activity but on the programmable meters ch. 5 and 6. and AES\EBU output side but no sound thru the powered D 90 speakers. Just a snap when the powered is turned on. Additionally, The speaker tray ICON reads MOTU volume 100 but the playback and record tabs in control panel show only speaker and bridge??? I used to get analog 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 and Mix 1-2 1 Mix 1-2 2 as selectable options. I also had all computer sounds coming thru the 896HD including the audio on the cubase tutorials...not NOTHING but a few computer internal speaker beeps if a pop up shows up somewhere
Motu tech support has been unable to steer me in any direction that might provide a solution. I did change the 1394 to a TI chipset PCI card and that seems to show that the 896 is connected to it in the control panel but now I and MOTU are at a standstill....any thoughts?
