I listened to the tracks and enjoyed them. Since there was only one Joe listed in the credits, I assume you must have been the producer and engineer.

Many years ago, (when I was just a small child :D ) I worked with Bruce Gaitsch in Chicago. He was a very good guitar player and I'm not surprised he's had a successful career, though I had no idea he wound up in Nashville.

bruce is a great friend of mine- i have worked with him on and off since '87- he moved to Nashvegas in '94 to raise his daughter her- away from Los Angeles- and yes everything was recorded here/ and i am also pastaman ;)-- Tony/Jai/Pierce were all recorded in their studios-

This EP is beautifully recorded and mixed and the playing and singing is great. Nice songs too. Very very nice work. I'd love to hear some of the details on what you did to get these great sounds, particularly the guitars and vocals, but also the Hammond. E.g., what mic and compressor on the vocals (sounds like different ones for different tracks)? How much was in the box and how much was outboard stuff? Anyway, excellent work. Thanks.

thanks man- great musicians get all the credit.... i am just ridin shotgun ')!!! guitars are pretty simple- i use the same sm57 i have had for 25 years on the front and I love the Mojave MA201 for the back(out of phase)- - regarding all the acoustics( McPherson Guitars for a start)- i use the Mojave- through a 1081 into a liquid channel with a touch of 2254 emulation and that does the conversion into the DM4800 (board) which dumps into DP via firewire card.

All the vocals cut through the Lawson with the 251 capsule- same chain (1081/Liquid Channel 2254)- i have found with this particular voice- it has a lot more presence than the C12. Piano and B3 both cut with dual 414 Blackface mics through 1073 into an MBOX- i cut about 5-6 passes and piece it together in DP- same with the guitar solos and organ parts- although those were recorded with stereo 414's and a 67 in front- but Tony Harrell is a master- so he pretty much idiot proofs anything you do when you get him to play on it!!!
Mark Hill has a fantastic sounding bass rig- but i have him directly into the 1081/Liquid Channel and it sounds big and warm-

90% of everything was recorded with the Mojave and the Lawson- both underpriced and over-performing items. same vocal mic on everything- pretty much the same vocal chain on everything. All efx were in the box and all the mixing was done in the box- albeit by someone who is quite a master.

i means a lot to me that you appreciate the technical parts of the work- most of my songwriter and musician friends just focus on the songs and the singin ;))

all the best

Thanks for the information. Nice simple signal chains and miking. Great result. I assume you didn't use the Maserati bundle on this particular project. Any thoughts on that product based on your experience (as it is clear you know of what you speak)?

are you kidding !!!!!! i use the maserati bundle on everything-!!! ;)

Nashville Rain- the into- that is an acoustic piano part through the Maserati Harmonix plugin- setting 2 with the locked delays- makes it sound like a cool coldplay sample- absolutely sets the stage of the song,

most all of the acoustics were recorded as dual mono passes, bounced through the maserati AGT plug - to a stereo file which was provided to mix engineer along with the dry parts- the mixes don't sound substantially different from my board mixes other than imaging and dimension which a great mix and master guy will get for you. All the lead vocals were run through the Maserati vocal plugs with a bit of the UAD Fairchild on the front end to warm it up- the plugs can get a bit thin- so use them judiciously, but use them indeed!!! also the UAD 33609 Neve plug-in is about as close to a 2254 buss compressor as you will get- i had one for years- at $300 its a steal- i would've gladly payed 4 times that amount. at $7500 for a stereo neve today- its shocking that i can get that same character through a plug!!! what a world we live in.

the maserati plugs are my primary reason for upgrading my CPU- the dual processors couldn't handle the load without glitching- my dual quad core powers through em!!

Love that product!!! especially for guys like me who just want to reach for something and not spend an hour trying to tweek something- those plugs are idiot proof!

I passed along the link to your site to a friend of mine, who also thought the music sounded great, and asked for some info on the drums.

If acoustic, how were they mic'd? Any drum software used as well?

what a nice comment- 1 song "promised land" real drums- Sha la la- real drums looped- and the rest- i programmed in EZ Drummer (Nashville Kit)- the key to the drums........ SPL- i use the plug- but it comes as an outboard piece. All the percussion, i played real time.

as far a micing- stereo overheads- (67's) 421's on the toms recorded to stereo pass- D112 on the kick- and then a 57 on top and below on the sn- pretty basic stuff. all the kicks and snares were replaced in DP with the MIDI trigger plugin- used the EZ Drummer Nashville sounds as triggers.

It never even occurred to me that these weren't acoustic drums, especially when I saw two drummers listed in the credits. If it hadn't been for my friend's question, I don't think I would have paid that much attention, so I listened to the songs again.

I'm really impressed with all of the drum sounds, considering about the only thing I've found use for in the Nashville kit is the snare and second ride cymbal on the list, or occasionally the hi hat. And while I've been able to get good sounds with both EZDrummer and Superior 2, I've never been able to achieve the type of brush sound you did. Rather than turn this into a drum thread, I'll just say good job again, and stop now. :D

Good stuff, Joe. Nice clean sound. I didn't have the time to listen to all the songs all the way through, but I listened to a bit of each and liked everything I heard. As you said, great musicians help, but don't give them all the credit. It sounds like you did a great job! :D
