Ultralite - Installation problem

I'm having a problem installing my Ultralite Mk3, if anyone can help me with this?
I am using 1.60 GHz laptop PC with Windows XP, 1.87 GB RAM. I connect the Ultralite to the laptop with a 6-pin to 4-pin firewire cable.
I have installed the Ultralite up-to-date software/drivers as per manual but cannot get it to work. The drivers appeared to load and PC said device was installed correctly and ready to use. I saw the MOTU choices in the dropdown list of the Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices, sound playback. I chose Main Outs. I then opened Windows Media Player to playback a WAV file and then got error message and could not play the file. Turning off the Ultralite allowed me to use Windows Media Player using the soundcard of my laptop but the MOTU did not show up in the Sounds & Audio Devices list any more. Double-clicking the MOTU Audio Console icon I got a message saying no MOTU equipment was connected (although it still was).
I have no idea how to troubleshoot this problem - if anyone out there could give me some advice I would really appreciate ...
