Well it seems I really screwed up this time. I was recording audio and MIDI simultaneously from a keyboard and went back to do a punch-in. I didn't notice that the overdub button was on. So instead of replacing MIDI data, it got merged. I now have a good audio track but a MIDI track that's all messed up at the punch in. Is there any way to un-merge that data or is it FUBAR?

Perhaps, but I'm not sure how to go about doing it. It's the last take I want to preserve, but without the previous MIDI data. It's the merge thing that has me baffled.

Well maybe you could go back to a place where you have the MIDI part you want, make a clipping of that MIDI part or drag it to the desktop or whatever. Then return to where you are now and replace the merged MIDI part you don't want with one that you do... Or something like that... You'd have to make sure everything was in the correct position etc...

I think I'm screwed. I've tried all that. The problem is that the data I want did not get recorded to a clear track. It got merged into existing data. So wherever I jump into the history it is either pre or post merge. Pre-merge gives me the data I don't want and post-merge is where I am now. FUBAR!

hmm, I seem to always get back to where I want in the undo time line.
1st I would duplicate audio file elsewhere, and then go back in time. I've done this with few punch ins. Just look in the time line and just double click to before the punch.
For safety means, do it from a copy version.

If you can do that, I'd start with what timriley suggested.

An easy way is to Save (with all the new overdubed data)
Go back in undo history before the overdub
Drag a clipping of the original unwanted data to the desktop (making note of the exact location of the starting note)
Revert To Saved
Make a similar track and drag the clipping into it (making sure that the starting note is in the correct location)
Bring both tracks up in the SE
The similar track with the clipping will show what notes to delete

I see what you're saying, but the problem is that I DON'T want anything just before the punch. What I want is the data that was punched in, which I can't extract from the merged MIDI track.

Yeah, that was my first thought. It's a complicated piece (mucho rubato with no conductor track), and the pianist was here just for the one session. The audio I recorded wasn't that bad. It's just that I have a Steinway VI that would have been better. Oh well. Whoever it was that first said •••• happens had theirs together.

I've done the same thing.... you can undo to the point before you made the punch, copy the good MIDI you want, then redo. You can then delete the merged MIDI and paste in the good MIDI from the clipboard.
