Not sure what you're getting at. I've only used something called "keyframes" when making Macromedia Flash animation. If you'd like to fade into a soundbite, all you have to do is click-drag across the area of the soundbite you'd like to fade, and hit Control + F. This will open the fades dialogue, and you can choose whatever type of fade you like. To crossfade two soundfiles together, just make sure they overlap, then selct the are you'd like the fade to be created in, Control + F, and you're in business.
Hope this helps...

lets say you have a 10 second clip, and half- way through you want it too fade out for a second and then back in to normal level. Well you can use mix auotomation by recording the channel slider. When played back. the channel slider automates to mimic your fadeout/in.
Keyframes are added to the sounbite which visually represent the fade out/in.
Its impossible to do precise mixing with the channel slider.
How do I manually insert feyframes onto the sound byte to create the desired fade out/fade in?
I am not talking about simple fades at the beginning, end or to join 2 seperate clips. I am speaking about the level of 1 specific clip throughout its duration.

yeah, think keyframes is more of a graphics thang
anyway, you just need to automate it graphically, rather than by hand, if this is the way you want to do it.
get up the soundbites window, and then in the drop-down menu on the left (where it gives you choices of in/out/soundbites, etc). click on the soundbites one - you get a drop-down menu. just pull down/select til it says volume, then you're ready to rock! use the pencil tool to create lines/volume automation to your heart's content...
god, it's hard explaining things written down
