Motu896HD recording and live performance

I have a question about the configuration of the 896HD. We have a 16 channel mixer and amplifier that we use for playing at shows. I want to set up the motu to record 8 channels and was wondering if I can feed the microphone xlrs into the input and loop thru the xlr outs to our amplifier/mixer? Or do I need to buy "y" connectors and feed the motu and the mixer direct.
