Same interface and mics I assume?? I'm interested in this also as I have just come from a Roland 2480 to DP 6.01. Of course I'm using a new interface to the computer, the Roland was just pretty much a hardrive for me. I still use my Avalon 737's in front of the computer, but DP 6 definately sounds better. This ain't a good comparison though as I was using a Mackie 1604 with the Roland........

I have noticed a diff between the two as well.

And very similar to what you are saying.

in a nutshell I find logic a little 'duller' and DP a little brighter.

Can't explain it any other way.

Resonant Alien wrote:Another odd thing I noticed is that when playing through Logic, it sounds the same as when listening to the playback directly out of the my interface without going into either DAW, so it would seem that DP is having some effect on the sound as it is passing through.
That was my impression too. I didn't voice it much here but I did recording (printing) and playback comparison between the two using the same source audio file, interface, monitors, etc. I found no analytical difference with SpectraFoo and phase reversal test (after time-aligning and level matching). Still DP sounds fuller and mellower, Logic sounds more clear and punchy and the same as iTunes. The only visible difference in sound libraries between DP and everything else is MAS sitting on top of CoreAudio vs CoreAudio itself. Which brings a question, if someone could do the same comparison with DAE... :?:

So how about his: Why not post a small sample from each and we can do a poll. Which sounds 'better' to the listener? A or B? Then you can tell us which was which and which was wasn't...

Just a thought.

I'd love to hear the two myself, but perhaps eliminating the criterion of "better" would be a more productive approach? If the two are different, then it would be great to continue the discussion on *how* they sound different where other similar discussions on *why* the two might sound different have always proven to be lessons in futility like so many other DP vs Logic threads.

On that note (and way OT): Jack Black is brilliant. :P

Always looking on the positive, fair side these hobbits are! :) Yes, indeed, you are correct. But when were done can we bash one or the other? Or as a public figure recently stated: Let's have a fair trial and then hang him! :)

Oh, why not?!

Somehow, I get the feeling that what Vince plays on the guitar will go far to make the differences harder to notice!

The only test that makes much sense, scientifically at least, is ye olde "reverse polarity and sum" test. To perform a meaningful test, set up must be extremely precise, and internal level and panning differences between the programs must be accounted for. Signal must be simultaneously recorded onto both DAWS, or a recorded source used to allow exact replication of the test performance. I am not suggesting that there is not a difference. I just like to be sure we use the scientific method when trying to discern the truth.

I seem to recall Grimpoch having conducted a variety of tests, and his coming to the conclusion that if level and panning are removed from the equation, the two DAWs provide identical results.

That's the way I remember it too, Markus.

That's the point. My test samples were "objectively" (by measurement) identical. It's the sound generated by the two DAWs that is subjectively different. That's why I'm curious if there are any "subjective" difference between MAS, CoreAudio and DAE.

I think the different sounds in the various daws are mostly that they use different pan laws, and I guess if they use various a-->d or d-->a example 32 bit floating etc...... they all have some kind of sonic signature.

ot:Monkey Man, that's a GREAT AVATAR!!!
