Why no playback audio?

Help!
I'm converting some old bluegrass performances and running my cassette deck into my M-audio. I have soundbites but can't play them back. Curiously, I'm getting sound by playing the deck through DP and CAN record but can't play back
Here's status:
Audio system can only be heard through MOTU, not DEA or hye other.
Configure speaker check: Go
Record enabled: Go
Input/Output only give me M-Audio option and they are GO.
Curiously, when I try to record on ch. 5, I cannot hear the monitor unless ch. 3 is record enabled, and ch. 3 play-enabled AND ch. 3 monitor is on.
That's probably two issues?
Please give me suggestions, anybody?
