Groove from Audio: What am I doing wrong Help Please Shooshi

1. Beats are aligned in Waveform Editor and Sequence Editor
2. Set soundbite tempo
3. Selection on WFEditor of 8 bars of 2/4
4. Create Groove of 16/4
5. Apply Groove to same MIDI file in Sequence Editor
6. Velocities do not change even when applied; though they were set to Full and 200% in the New Groove

Thanks anyone for help! Best wishes. Earl

Is your sequence aligned with the soundbites? That is, are your barlines aligned to the audio beats, or vice-versa? The entire sequence has to be consistent with itself and the counter. If that's not the problem, I'm not sure what to try next. Looks like you did the right steps. You are using the Groove quantize command, correct? Maybe Magic Dave could help.

Thanks Shooshie. Yes, The Sequence is aligned with the Soundbites. The barlines are aligned with the Audio. I am using the Groove Quantize command. Could someone ask Magic Dave for help on this? Many thanks. Best wishes, Earl

Just checked. Working fine for me.

Command double click on the soundbite. This will open the Waveform editor. Click the Beats tab. This will display the found beats and their relative velocities. Everything look ok there?

In the Sequence editor, hide all tracks except the track with the groovy soundbite. Use the edit resolution grid to snap to barlines, and select the groove region in the timeline ruler. Go to the Region menu and choose Create Groove. Do so, including closing the Create Groove window, which will ask you to save the groove changes..

Open the MIDI graphic editor. Display whatever tracks you want to groove. With snap to grid on, make the selection in the timeline ruler.

Back in the Region menu, choose Groove Quantize. Open your groove file. Press the edit button. You'll get another window that graphically shows the groove template. You should see the timing, duration, and velocity information. Close the groove edit window. In the Groove Quantize window, set Timing and Velocity to Full. Apply the groove.

You should see the results in the MIDI editor. Any luck?

Many Thanks Dave:

I'm using 5.13.

This is not happening:
1. Use the edit resolution grid to snap to barlines
2. Select the groove region in the timeline ruler.

There is an option to snap to quarter notes, but not to snap to barlines, unless I am missing something.
The cursor is "stuck" to <-I-> regardless of the tool being selected in the Tool Palette, so again unless I am missing something I can't select a region.

Hope this is possible in 5.13. Thanks for helping. Best, Earl

Snap to grid can be set to quarter notes or whole notes. The point is to make an exact selection in the timeline ruler (not the waveform). Therefore you want snapping turned on. If the cursor is not snapping, hold down the Command key to toggle snap to grid.

So, when you were extracting grooves, you just didn't have an exact match in the audio selection? Is that what the problem was?

There were several problems.

1. Making the selection for the Groove in the Waveform Editor rather than the Sequence Editor.
2. Not using the snap to grid feature in the Sequence Editor.

3. Overuse of Seriousity
4. Not supplying MLC with bifocals for my initial post: "Thanks anyone for help!"
:-P

Thanks guys you're all the greatest. e

It's not bifocals I need. It's a better sense of humor. :( I asked for one for Xmas, but got bifocals instead!
