My question may be naive but Is there a way to control the volume of individual samples?
Let's say I have a drum kit loaded and I want to take down the snare volume in relation to the rest of the kit.
The key group seems the place to do this but how?

You're right, the keygroup is the place to do it. You can change the volume per keygroup by adjusting the "Amp" knob, just about the envelope section.

Again I want to route individual drum kit elements (Sn,kik,Toms) to different channels in DP6 desk for external reverbs/EQ and so on.

Yes — use the List Editor. Make sure to expand both the layer and the keygroup (the triangles next to each is pointing downward) and you'll see an "Output" column. By default, all keygroups are assigned to "[Part] Main Out"; click on that text to open a menu with your available output choices.

If you have multiple keygroups selected in the List Editor, changes will be made to all selected keygroups. This is a quick way to change batches of keygroups at once, say, all of your HH keygroups, or all of your toms.

The simplest way to do the above is to create layers for each part (i.e. snare layer, tom layer, etc) then clicking on the layer name in the list editor will highlight all the keygroups in that layer.
