I went to an apple store today and no one could get the output assignment display to change to:
1, 2, 3, 4...
instead, it always showed:
1&2, 3&4...

One salesperson swore that if a motu h/w device was connected the display will definitely change.
Well, I'm not sure that I believe that. Does anyone who has logic and a motu device
know for sure that the output display will change to single outs when the device is attached?

I"m beginning to think Logic just does not suport this. I know all about the pan hard left and right
game and we played with that universal checkbox, but it's hard to answer this question without sitting in front
of a computer with both Logic and a motu device connected. When I use Autodesk it does not have this problem - I see the single outs! I'm told protools doesn't have this problem either.
I don't want to spend $500 on logic only to find out it can't handle this. I don't want to pan hard right and left. This is 2008.

What do you mean? Logic supports mono instruments. When you add a track select type:Audio then Format:Mono. What are you trying to do anyway?

when you add an audio instrument you don't get a mono/stereo choice.

therefore you need to do the following:

go in the environment (if you know how to use it... if not PM me) and in the "all tracks" go the output 1&2 / 3&4... whichever you want to go out of.

Change it to mono using the switch at the bottom of the channel. It will be default become the odd number (1&2 will become 1 etc). Create another channel strip to become the other one (ie: 2 / 4 etc)

Then you will be able to route the instrument (as long as it is a mono plugin) to a single output.

Here is a small guide I wrote to anybody else who wants to do this:

Do this exactly as I do, I'm guiding you from a new project, but once you've seen it done by itself you can apply it to any project you have.

Right,

1) Open Logic. You get offered a choice of new projects. Choose EMPTY PROJECT.
2) You get offered a choice of adding tracks. Select "Software Instrument". Route it to Output 1-2 in the drop down. Press OK.
3) In the inspector (left hand side), insert an ES-1 (for example only) as a mono instrument. (Input - ES1 - Mono) ES1 opens. Close it.
4) Open the environment, Window -> Environment. It shows: Prelisten, Inst 1, Click, Output 1-2, Master.
5) On the Output 2 strip, it has some buttons at the bottom. There is one with 2 circles on it crossed over. Click it. The 2 meters in the channel strip become one. In the middle of the strip, it goes from saying "Output 1-2" to "Output 1" but the channel is still called "Output 1-2". For simplicity, click on the channel, and in the menu on the left hand side, where it says "Output 1-2 in bold, double click, and rename it "Output 1" for your reference.
6) In the environment, at the top, click new -> channel strip -> output. The strip you just modified goes grey, and say "controlled by stereo object "Output 1-2".
7) On the new channel strip, now labelled "Ouput 1-2", once again click the 2 circles to make it mono. The "Output 1" (greyed out) strip now shows a meter again.
With the second output strip, still called "Output 1-2", but with "Output 1" in the middle, still highlighted, go to the left hand menu, click on the bold text, and for your reference, rename it to "Output 2"
9) On the left hand menu, it lists "Icon, Device, Channel, MIDI Channel, Value as, (and some tick boxes)". On "Channel", it should say "Output 1". Click on this, and a drop down box comes up. From here, go "Output -> Output 2". You will notice, in the middle of the highlighted strip, the text now reads "Output 2"
10) On the Inst 1 channel strip in the environment, in Blue it reads "ES-1", and below it reads "Out 1-2". Below that is a Pan Knob, pan that to "-64"

Now play. You will see the signal appear only in the Output 1 meter, so you can use that as your master without affecting the output 2 master. Unfortunately you have to do the panning thing, but that's just Logic...
